SK Rwanda FINAL Days of Ministry

The team has officially begun the debrief process after two final FULL fulfilling days of ministry.  First, SUNDAY.  In true style, the team exhibited patience and poise in the name of flexibility.  Plans changed as roads were closed due to another Car-Free Sunday.  But that did not deter nor discourage the team as they still served alongside the body of Christ at CGF and CLA (main campus).  So much so that the Spirit fully filled the CGF team serving for 3 hours in children's ministry.  Praise the Lord for His strength and creativity!  After a refuel meal the team then headed to Busanza to teach and lead the almost 100 children there in a Bible lesson, games, and more.  It was a GLORIOUS Sunday all for His glory.

Then MONDAY brought the wrap up of everything.  The teams divided up again between CGF & CLA preschools to finish up their observations and lessons.  It was bittersweet to spend a final morning with the most adorable preschoolers.  Lunch came before the team then had an opportunity to engage in more of the city with a visit to the Craft Village and then a return to CGF for a beautifully organized time of appreciation and reflection with Pastor Etienne and team.  It was a sweet time to say goodbye to their Rwandan team of translators, leaders, and now forever friends!  It is hard to believe that the 2-week journey to Rwanda is coming to a close...but MAN did they do and see and experience and feel so very much in these long days.

With that, now pray for the team as they will "go dark" in the sense of updates in their final 48 hours in-country. Now is a crucial time for the team to remember and reflect upon their life-changing time in Africa.  It was most certainly not an easy road to get there nor to persevere when legs were weary and eyes were heavy.  But they most certainly did it and did it WELL for His Kingdom.  So pray for this debrief process. Pray for hearts and lives to be totally transformed.

SK Costa Rica Grand Finale

Costa Rica Team went to the 8:00am Church service at Vida Abundante then we served at the 10:30 service for the children’s ministry and youth classes.  After church we visited with the youth for a small gathering where our boys participated in a friendly game of Costa Rican football. We had another typical Costa Rican meal with rice, chicken, and beans. Walked around the city to learns more about the capital and see a bit of culture.  Afterwards we headed back to the hotel ordered in for pizza and did a debrief and affirmations.   We have an early morning breakfast at 6:00 AM because we are going to do a nature walk then head straight to the airport to catch our flight back to LAX.  See you soon!

Pastor Rudy also gave us a tour of the church building and shared with us the story of Vida Abundante Heredia.

Had lunch at Don Lela’s for a traditional Costa Rican food. Most of us had Chicken Casada (chicken, rice and beans).

Our driver took us to downtown San Jose to experience Costa Rican culture and stopped by POPs for some ice cream! Our KSG kids were very happy about that!😂

Pura Vida Costa Rica!  It’s been a most memorable trip for our team.  Too many M&M’s to count!  We on our flight heading back home. We woke early today n the morning for our R&R activity. Our awesome driver Randall took us to La Paz waterfall park where we saw walked through the rain forest and met some of the other local Costa Rican residents. See photos. Then before we left to the airport we made sure to enjoy our last typical Costa Rican cuisine of rice, chicken, and beans. What a trip!  Praise Jesus for His favor and incredible joy and peace!

SK Costa Rica: Saturday 6/23 UPDATE

Hola Again Saturday 6/23/18 update

Today was another full day.  We started the morning early at a Vida Abundante day camp with youth 8-12 years of age. This is an annual event that the church does for their kids. About 100 kids participated and our KSG students participated in games and activities as well. Two of our kids were ask to share their testimonies; Cion & Samantha.  They were great! Oh yeah, Michael and me were forced to dance to rap music so all the kids would have a good laugh for the day.

We left by 1:00 to participate in the church’s homeless feeding ministry. This was a great experience for our team and our team led a homeless lady to Jesus. She was prayed over by Lea and the Pastor Hector. Great conversations with church volunteers and homeless people.  Countless stories to share here.

Afterwards we grabbed a quick lunch because we went to a bible study fellowship with teens that included 4 boys ages 15-20 and 5 Girls ages 16-20.  The adults stepped up in this situation and shared a message about growing in faith.   We played a game for an icebreaker then message.  Then we divided the boys from the girls.  The ladies met with the girls for heartfelt discussion and prayer time.  The guys met with the boys for deep discussion, challenges in their lives, and prayers. This was a huge M&M for the team. There was lots of encouragement and deep discussions with both girls and boys  We ended with a snack for the kids.

We had a nice long debrief of the day over dinner. Tomorrow is an early day church 8:00am then we will serve at the 10:00 am service. Rest of the day will be another outreach activity

Good night!  We are exhausted so prayers for strength much appreciated.

Father's Day feeding of the homeless with Vida Abundate.  The team delivered food and gifts of soap, toothbrush/paste, deodorant, etc. to the homeless fathers.

This last picture comes with a powerful story.  This is Jocelyn who has been homeless for 4 months.  Her story is difficult filled with more than 25 years of alcohol and growing up with an abusive father.  She received Christ today! What a powerful moment for the team to share with her!
She literally melted into Lea's arms as the team was praying for her! Praise the King!

And finally this was in the afternoon youth group at Sonrisas con Esperanza where the SK adults stepped up big time to encourage these young men and ladies in their walk and discipleship with Christ!

SK Rwanda: Saturday June 23

Today was the much-anticipated day of Kids Small Groups discipleship training for the CLA Leaders and churches they invited.  The team was honestly a smidge nervous never having led a full-fledged training/conference for such a long time.  But they rose to the occasion mightily, especially under what we are coining DouglasTraining.com.  Particularly Terry once again took his leadership gifts and expertise as a KSG leader to provide the structure that the rest of the team likewise rose up to teach, discuss, and create together.  They blessed 60 leaders from 8 different churches in how they too could think differently about discipleship of children.  Way to go!

After this long day of training that lasted through a shared lunch at CLA, the team was ready for some reflection and rest time.  It has been a FULL time of ministry in Rwanda from sun up to sun down, literally.  So a visit to RZ Manna for a little sweet treat was welcomed and needed.  The team now is wrapping up the day post-dinner with some team time in preparation for their last Sunday with their home churches - CLA & CGF.  It is hard to believe they are winding down to the final 48 hours of full ministry days before beginning the full-fledged debrief process.  Trust me, there is LOTS to debrief after everything this team has seen, felt, and experienced.  Pray for the final days of ministry to be powerful and action-packed.  Pray for continued health to cover the team.  Pray for each and every moment to truly sink in as they reflect on the relationships, memories, and moments that began one week ago today in Rwanda.

SK Argentina: July 22

SADDLEBACK KSG TEAM ARGENTINA 2018
Blog Post June 22, 2018

Down for devotions at 0730 (we are now on John’s military time ðŸ˜Š). Our devotional today was on I Corinthians 12:12-27. We are all members of the body of Christ. Everyone is different, but we are all part of the same body. Remember that even though we are all different, our operating system is Jesus Christ. Remember the warmth we felt serving here in Argentina, even though we all have different gifts. Remember we are all leaders in the church, even though we may not all be on stage or speaking to large groups of people.

After that we did Affirmations, which took most of the day (7 hours). An Affirmation is when we tell each person on our team what we admire and appreciate about that person. Negative statements, backhanded compliments and sarcasm are not allowed. It was truly an inspiring time to affirm each person and bring up things that person did and said that no one else may have seen. It was an inspiring time of blessing.

This afternoon was our free day. We went to Caminito in the La Boca region of Buenos Aires. This is an area where there are lots of colorfully painted buildings, street markets and little shops. It is right on the water, near the port area. We did a little shopping for souvenirs and browsed the markets.

Tonight we were a bit of a fractured group. Ariana wasn’t feeling well (a few of us are a bit under the weather), so Liz and Ariana stayed in, and John went with Jessica to meet with Saddleback BA staff.  The rest of us went to dinner.

Tonight is our last night in Argentina. We said good-bye to Joy and Jack, who are leaving tomorrow morning (about 12 hours before our flight) to fly to London. We will miss Joy’s smile, her warmth and her “White Beast” (Joy’s name for her camera, but John thought she was talking about him, which was a funny moment). We will miss Jack’s silliness, his smile and his way with the other kids.  We love you, Justus League!

SADDLEBACK KSG TEAM ARGENTINA 2018
Blog Post June 21, 2018
We had breakfast in our rooms and then came down to the hotel basement for devotions at 8:30. We were missing a devotional, so each small group either picked a favorite devotional or discussed the highlights of our trip so far. Once again, the kids led the devotional, and their insights and wisdom were far beyond their years. There is a lot of depth in this group of children, and you can tell that KSG has done an amazing job in helping build that spiritual foundation in our kids.
After devotions, we grabbed all our bags of clothing to donate. Kris called an Uber to take the bags without wheels to Saddleback Buenos Aires, and the rest of us schlepped the rolling bags the mile or so to Saddleback BA. We soon learned that the 3 green and black bags were not really designed for city walking, but no one complained, even though the bags kept turning over. Kudos to Sean, who was our sweeper this week to make sure no one fell behind while we walked through Buenos Aires, and Tim, who stood out in the street at intersections to keep kamikaze cars from hitting us as we crossed.
Our job for today was making blankets for Venezuelan refugees who have fled the unrest in Venezuela and have pretty much no warm clothing or blankets. When we arrived at Saddleback BA, Liz and Ariana were whisked off to the Buenos Aires garment district with some Saddleback BA volunteers to buy fabric, while the rest of us cleaned the room where we would make the blankets. The kids did a great job sweeping, vacuuming and mopping the floor. Windows were cleaned. The room shone when we were done.
Then we sorted the clothing we had brought from Southern California. We had a bit of free time before lunch. The kids have been playing Mafia all trip in the back of the bus and during breaks, but today they played a more Christian version called Salvation. It is cool to see what good friends the kids have become on this trip.
After a lunch of hot dogs, we started in on the blankets. The blankets were basically 2 large squares of felt that have a cut fringe, and then the fringe edges are tied so that the 2 squares stay together. We had about 30 blankets to make, and we could make about 2 to 3 at a time. The first few blankets took a long time to make. We measured every fringe cut meticulously to make sure it was even, and every fringe end was tied with care. The scissors we were using were craft scissors and not fabric scissors, so they didn’t cut very well, and most of us had to cut the fringe for each piece of felt separately. We realized we were going to be there a long time. Meanwhile, most of the Saddleback BA volunteers were watching Argentina play Croatia in the World Cup (Argentina lost 3-0), so it was a bit distracting to the kids to hear cheers erupt every few minutes.
Then Sean got the brilliant idea to tie every other fringe end. He demonstrated, and it looked pretty good. This saved us quite a bit of time. We stopped measuring the fringe ends, as a chorus of “Deep and Wide” broke out. The tables started the game of competitive blanket making, and that sped things up. With every blanket finished, we lifted it up and shouted “Goal!” until Argentina lost the game, after which we shouted “Hallelujah!” Adults cut the fringe, and the kids were right behind them tying it off. The time to make a blanket went from about 20 minutes to 5 minutes. Finally we were on the last 2 blankets. Both tables finished at about the same time. We realized we had made 30 blankets that would keep people warm this winter, and it was a good feeling.
After that the kids helped make patches to sew on the blankets. Each patch had a statement like “Jesus te ama” and “Dios es amor”.
We said good-bye to our friends from Saddleback BA – Geri, Simon, Joey, Mikaela and many others. It had been hard work, but we felt like we had made a difference with the clothes we brought and the blankets we made.
That evening John took the kids to dinner and the adults got a rare adult dinner together. It was a good time of sharing and conversation and continuing to get to know each other.

SK Rwanda: Friday 6/22

The power of God continues to move mightily throughout the rolling hills of Rwanda.  The team returned to Ruhuha now 18 team members strong ready for another action-packed day of ministry.  Mr. Terry Douglas led the charge as the team impacted 37 Sunday school teachers/leaders.  Smaller sub-teams each taught about one of the purposes in a FUN way so that the leaders can 1) get the importance of the purposes as a foundation of vision and 2) allow them to think differently in how they do children's ministry.  The team was outstanding as they shared from their personal experiences in growing up in children's ministry at Saddleback Church.  Well done!

Then the afternoon held another fun-filled time with abana (children in Kinyarwandan).  They got to be carefree and were intentional still as they played the games that each sub-team had come up with for each of the purposes.  The kids from the surrounding neighborhood had an incredible, memorable time!

Pray for the team as they RIGHT NOW are leading a 6-hour training on Purpose Driven Children's Ministry at CLA.  They are expecting anywhere from 20-60.  May the Spirit flow through the hearts and mouths of each team member!

SK Costa Rica: DAY TWO

We did home visits this morning to 5 families where we delivered food and household supplies.  These families were selected by a man of peace in a poor neighborhood.  Vida Abundante has a good relationship with each of them.  This was a close up and personal experience for our teams.  We prayed for each family their houses.  Our KSG students stepped up BIG time by sharing their heartfelt prayers for these families.  Hearts were definitely broken today and the needs are great as you know walking in the poorest of communities is heartbreaking.  We had a long debrief discussion with the parents and kids.  The tears and cries of people in real need of basic provisions was difficult yet eye-opening to this team.

The team again was overwhelmed with the heartbreaking living conditions of the families that we visited.  For example, in the picture below is a family of a single mom with 10 kids.  Mom goes to night school for primary education with her young kids.  She is 43 years old and her health is not good.  Very sad but prayers can and will work a miracle in her life.
